About this deal

I have to say if you asked me last week whether I had read Skellig by David Almond I would have looked at you blankly for a bit and then said “Well, I have a feeling I read it in primary school. No, I definitely did. But I can’t really remember what happens in it.”

I realise that that kind of means that I saw it as forgettable but please bear in mind it was about thirteen years ago and I have a horrible memory for books. Seriously, I can forget my favourite books that I’ve only just put down and that doesn’t mean that I don’t love them. I just have a shoddy memory.

Skellig also explores the theme of friendship. Michael, who is initially estranged from his friends, meets his neighbour Mina and they build an incredible bond. Through the character of Mina the reader is introduced to alternative methods of schooling as Mina is home-schooled and is fascinated with nature and the poet William Blake. Michael and Mina overcome their worries together and their friendship becomes stronger as the story progresses. If that was all there was to the story, it would just be another take on I-believe-in-fairies, with a somewhat scrawny, grumpy out-of-shape fairy.

a b Holmwood, Leigh (2 September 2008). "Tim Roth to don wings as Skellig". The Guardian . Retrieved 2 September 2008. The book is well written using easy to interpret language and would definitely be suitable for children aged 9+. It is an excellent book to share with your children as it covers many topics in a way that make them easier to talk about. Cripps, Charlotte; l (26 November 2003). "The creature in the garage". The Independent.co.uk . Retrieved 15 September 2008. Skellig has been adapted into a contemporary opera with music by American composer Tod Machover and libretto by David Almond himself. The opera was staged at The Sage Gateshead from 4 November to 19 December 2008, with orchestration by the Northern Sinfonia. [16]And I remember Mina, Michael’s gloriously spirited best friend. She’s the one who doesn’t believe in education and would rather draw pictures of birds, create models out of clay and quote William Blake at all those nay-sayers. She’s the one who’s wild around the edges and doesn’t make apologies for being different. And she’s the one who is "extraordinary” and will hold Michael’s hand and give it that extra squeeze if he’s feeling like he’s drifting away.
