About this deal

You can expect to have 20-30% charge left by the end of a day of moderate use, which is what we typically saw when not playing games on the Moto G62 for any significant time. Very light users may be able to squeeze two days out of a charge, but we don’t think that is realistic if you tend to watch YouTube on your phone, or spend time scrolling through social media apps. Camera Setup: Camera Feature: Camera Feature: Dual Capture, Spot Color, Night Vision, Cinemograph, Portrait, Live Filter, Group Selfie, Pro Mode (W/ Long Exposure), Artificial Intelligence: Low Light AI Selfie, Shot Optimization, Auto Smile Capture, Gesture Capture, Other Features: Selfie Animation, Face Beauty, RAW Photo Output, HDR, Timer, Active Photos, Assistive Grid, Leveler, Watermark, Burst Shot, Video Feature: Dual Capture, Spot Color, Timelapse (W/ Hyperlapse), Slow Motion, Other Features: Video Stabilization, Face Beauty, Video Snapshot The Motorola Moto G82 runs Android 12 and uses the classic Moto interface. This makes fairly light changes to the Google blueprint, meaning you get to see the changes made to Android’s Material Design style in version 12. Real-world stamina is good, but predictably doesn’t quite reach that of some rivals, such as the 60Hz Sony Xperia 10 IV and the old 720p Moto G50 5G, which have slightly less demanding components. Such phones can last almost two days, even with more demanding usage patterns.

Justifying its price compared to the now-discounted Moto G62 5G will likely be the biggest struggle for the G53, as the other specifications are either the same or slightly inferior. The battery is 5,000mAh, but fast charging is only 10W, compared to the G62 5G’s 15W, and while the 6.5in display has a 120Hz refresh rate, it only has an HD+ resolution. The main camera is again a 50MP sensor, though the superfluous 2MP macro lens has been dropped, folding those duties into the 8MP ultrawide lens. The battery is 5000mAh. But it is laughable that it comes with a USB 2.0 5V/2A charger that can take up to 4 hours. Using a USB-C 100W (well, anything above 25W) reduces this to 2 hours and 33 minutes. We repeated the tests several times. Android feels OK in the Moto G62, but you can tell this is a lower-end phone. As mentioned in the display section of this review, there are micro-stutters during basic navigation that spoil the effect of the 120Hz display a little. In typical LCD fashion, the Moto G62 loses a bit of brightness when viewed off-axis – not a big problem – and its peak brightness is not super-impressive either. In testing it delivered a maximum of 513 nits when out in strong direct sunlight, where some phones from a rung or two up can reach 650 to 770 nits. It makes a big difference for display visibility when outdoors. Screen orientation is an issue. The combo Accelerometer and Gyroscope are very sensitive, and the slightest movement sends it to landscape. I had to turn autorotation off.

Like these specs suggest, the camera quality here is fairly middle of the road. The addition of an ultra-wide lens adds some flexibility, though a telephoto would have been nice to see rather than the narrow and niche utility of a macro lens. PC Mark 3.0 battery test is one of the more accurate tests for heavy use, but it simply would not run.

It has an Analytical: (bass/mid recessed; treble boosted) – crisp but not pleasant for most music. It will decode Dolby Atmos and downmix it to the earpiece and down-firing bottom speaker. This is an odd sound signature almost all focused on 1-6kHz (voice). The camera setup that is the staple of the Motorola GX2 series includes a 50MP 1/2.76" f/1.8 main camera, aided by an 8MP ultrawide and 2MP macro shooter. We are, interested to see how the budget 50MP sensor performs compared to competitors using the larger 64MP and 48MP sensors. This is, in part, because the Moto G82 has a sensor with a small surface area compared to its resolution. The Samsung JN1 is a 1/2.76-inch sensor, a little smaller than the 1/2.55-inch Sony IMX363 of the Pixel 6a (which also benefits from native resolution shooting), and dramatically smaller than the 1/1.56-inch Sony IMX766 of the OnePlus Nord 2T. This takes the phone from flat to 50% charge in 27-28 minutes, and it reaches 100% after 80 minutes. The Moto G82 continues to draw a charge at a measly 4W for a while after, but when you’re running low on juice, the 2%-a-minute charge rate means just 10 minutes plugged in can see you right for a long night. The Moto G82 also has good, although not remotely class-leading, fast charging. It supports 30W fast charging, and a 30W charger is included in the box.
