I am always on the lookout for a new family board game so when one of my neighbours was selling off a copy of the Harry Potter Diagon Alley game, I snapped it up without ever having heard of it before. Every player also gets two of each type of coin ( Galleons, Sickles, and Knuts) and two Spell cards to begin the game with. The game plays just like the base game, but here players are simply trying to get as many things into their trunk as possible. After a long period of testing, recapping and additional work done, the system is now up and running for the family.

The books are a little bloated, and there is a lot of "stuff" that I don't feel adds to the story in a meaningful enough way to be included. My husband and I played the game several times in a night with each game lasting around 20 minutes, although I imagine a game with more players would last far longer. If your family likes the Harry Potter movies, don’t go into this game thinking it will recreate any of those experiences, but the combination of the use of symbols well known from the movies, the frenetic dice rolling and the educational aspect of learning “L-R-C”, locations and collection all make Harry Potter Mischief In Diagon Alley a game we can recommend for families. Cards come in two varieties: Havoc, which must be played immediately, and Spell, which can be held and used at the player's leisure. I was intrigued, and as I have made a habit of reviewing out of production board games, of course I had to give it a whirl.

I was a little worried that my five and seven year old would not be able to handle the real time aspect of rolling and re-rolling dice to get the items.
