About this deal

I have previously read a book by Sarah Crossan and loved that, so it was the authors name that initially caught my attention and made me want to learn more about the book. If you've ever experienced the pain of being in a horrible situation beyond your control and having to accept it and the pain of loss this will trigger you, as it did me. The poetic, free-verse style of Moonrise lets the words and thoughts of Joe, the main character, flow into each other in a dream-like way. The novel has also been mentioned for containing "magic, fantasy, and heroic adventure", and was recommended to fans of Harry Potter as possible reading material after that series' end. The pseudonym is used so that the individual novels in the series would not be shelved in different places in libraries.

The Moon and its mysteries have captivated the Stavenger family, and it will continue to exert its pull upon subsequent generations. She graduated with a degree in philosophy and literature before training as an English and drama teacher at Cambridge University. Crossan eloquently brings up themes of life and death, family, love, injustice, corruption, and the justice system in this gut-wrenching story. Moonrise reached The New York Times Best Seller list for children's chapter books, holding the number two spot for two weeks. Alcohol abuse led to her mother’s losing her job, and Iris has dropped out of school and found work utilizing her writing skills at the Oath Gazette.Anyways, I don’t know if this will only release in Australia, but if it ever comes to the US, I’ll look out for it! I would have like a little more depth and description of the physical elements in the story, to give me a better mind’s eye image, but the story world was nicely thought out. In fact one of the waitresses Sue tells Joe to just ignore them, as most people who live in Kirkland make a living doing a job that wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Kirkland Farm Prison. A timely catalyst destined to spark discussions about rights, fairness, and a justice system that succeeds for some but devastates others.

From one-time winner and two-time Carnegie Medal shortlisted author Sarah Crossan, this poignant, stirring, huge-hearted novel asks big questions. And in those briefly stolen moments of brotherly visits before the inevitable ending, Joe and Ed try to make up for lost time. It's better to be guilty and rich, I reckon,” Joe remarks, as he experiences the excruciating injustices of a legal system in which the harshness of a sentence depends on where a crime takes place, who the victim was, and who you can afford to pay to represent you (crucially, Ed had no representation when he was first arrested). They travel through the mountains, where they meet the Tribe of Rushing Water, a new group of cats first introduced in this novel. I would recommend this book a million times if I could as it’s a constant reminder of how truly captivating and magical reading can be.

While Joe doesn’t really want to go he doesn’t really have a choice as he is one of the few people who believe that Ed is innocent and shouldn’t be in prison let alone on Death Row. Devastating … Any reader with a heart will weep buckets’ – Sunday Times Book of the Week’Impossible to put down’ – The Times’An outstanding and daring achievement’ – Irish Examiner_______________SHORTLISTED FOR THE COSTA CHILDREN’S BOOK AWARD SHORTLISTED FOR THE YA BOOK PRIZE SHORTLISTED FOR THE CBI BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD SHORTLISTED FOR THE CLiPPA AWARD LONGLISTED FOR THE CILIP CARNEGIE MEDAL _______________They think I hurt someone. Despite moving to Texas, Joe hasn’t seen Ed yet as he is too scared to go to the prison alone but their aunt won’t help them and his sister, Angela can’t get the money for another month so Joe is forced to look for work or they won’t be able to say their rent. Another hefty sci-fi tome from Bova which details and epic struggle to maintain a base upon the Moon. This book explores the contradictions and injustices that surround the justice system in the United States, which is a very serious ongoing problem. His time alone in the small Texas town where Ed is in prison gives Joe time to reflect on his family dynamics and the love and bonds that endure. Polly Crosby tells ReadingZone about her novel, This Tale is Forbidden (Scholastic), a fractured fairy tale set in a dystopian world. While she insists that there’s no point wasting life or money helping someone who wasn’t sorry, Joe sees things differently. Many books are pure entertainment, but sometimes it's important to read stories that reflect reality.

This is a book that really got to me on an emotional level because of its heart-wrenching subject matter tearing a family apart, and yet there were also tender strands of hopefulness woven throughout that didn't just make this a difficult read – as I smiled along with the brothers reminiscing about sillier times too. It certainly was a young adult novel like no other I had read before (or since) and she has captured that same combination of elegantly written verse and a highly original story in her new novel coming out next month: Moonrise. I was very moved by this book, by its tale of innocence, of guilt by association, of the bravery of a 17 year old boy in the face of unimaginable adversity. The original investigation concluded with most of the evidence pointing to Sal, who was found dead in the woods, apparently by suicide.

I just began the sequel, Moonwar, and the narrator (performer) is not as good (the extra engineering -- voice effects, see below -- is also absent). It's an intense scene that really underscores just how alien and desolate an environment that the Moon is and shows up how terrifying nanomachines can be in the wrong hands. From what I remember of other books in the series (from more than a decade ago), the rise of technology and the idea of it being banned on Earth for religious reasons is a fairly major plot point from here on out, so it's interesting to see how that all began.
