About this deal

Of course adults can sit down with kids to explain this but I don't think it's a book that a child will appreciate as much as the adult. Yesterday a parent came over to tell me how impressed she was by the book fair and that you did a fabulous job of selling the books to the children first. Jeffers and Winston's first collaboration is a celebration of the child's world, illustrated in sumptuous double-page spreads featuring explosions of images borrowed from unforgettable sources. The beauty and power of children’s books is the subject of A Child of Books, which reads as much as a poetic manifesto as it does a story.

Lost and Found became Oliver's first book to made into animation by London based Studio AKA, screening on Christmas Eve 2008 on Channel 4 in the UK and on Nickelodeon in the US and Australia. I was at my last school for 4 years and we had ********* book fairs every term – and every term, I was disappointed by the narrow range of books. C., MoMA NYC and Stanford University, among many others, all hold his artist’s books in their permanent collections. There are drawings of the young girls and boy along with printed images or photographs and actual text making up pictures. It is both an invitation to succumb to the heady pleasures of reading, and a work of great beauty and imagination.

Interesting detailed drawings that could be great conversation starters for younger children, but I think this treasure is the PERFECT gift for the older (teen and up) book lover. Oliver Jeffers is the author-illustrator of many books for children, including Once Upon an Alphabet, which won a Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, and Lost and Found, which was a Nestlé Children’s Book Prize Gold Medal winner. The main idea of the story is about how reading a book can unlock a world of imagination but this idea won't make sense to children who just haven't had that experience yet.

When a little girl sails her raft across a sea of words to meet a boy, she takes him on an adventure of imagination.Oliver Jeffers is a Northern Irish artist and author-illustrator of children’s picture books, including Lost and Found and Here We Are. For example, within an ocean going boat, we are peppered by titles, great and wonderful books that shape us and build the traveling experience. Your words, like your reviews, bring books to life and give them a voice before the front cover is even turned.

Altogether, Bookwagon suggests that A Child of Books is a reading experience that merits being loved and shared. Some, she says, have forgotten the importance of stories, but she finds a boy and introduces him to her world, a land created through a marriage of Jeffers's evocative art and Winston's masterly use of typography. Yourself and Bob are much cherished in our booky world and I personally really appreciate everything that you do. You guys are such a force for good and I am a passionate supporter of Indie booksellers, so I'm so happy this worked out well (I'd love to know how many books were sold if you have it to hand - it felt like quite a lot! The story is delightful, but looking for words from well known classics which form the pictures is also fun (eg words from Shelley's Frankenstein form the monster) A celebration of the imagination that knows no boundaries. Your selection was perfect for our children and what really made the difference was your ability to engage with each child, discuss their interests and help them to choose a suitable book based on your extensive knowledge of the books you were selling.

I haven't charted out my visits for the summer term, but I'm sure there are several in the south) and thanks so much for being so fantastic! Elegant illustrations by Oliver Jeffers are accompanied by Sam Winston’s astonishing typographical landscapes, beautifully shaped from excerpts of children’s classics including Treasure Island, Little Women and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, creating a gorgeous gift book perfect for readers of all ages. His first picture book - A Child of Books - reached number five on the New York Times bestsellers list and won the Bologna Ragazzi award as well as being shortlisted for The Irish Book of the year award and the Good Reads readers choice award.
