About this deal

Told in dual POVs of both Rachel and her mother in law, Swati, we are present when Swati shows up one day to live with Rachel and her husband Dhruv. While filling out this form is not a guarantee you will receive a review/exam copy, we are happy to consider your request. Flora thought if Eric would apply himself to useful things as much as he did to his lust and longing, the farm would be a showplace. Given that Theroux has so far sustained a very successful 50-year career on the strength of his own predatory eye and nose, the only real question is: what’s next? She lives and works in Washington, DC, and she enjoys yoga, coffee, and her small dog friend, Sassafras.

She said she hoped he wouldn’t try to jump out, or worse, attack Brenner in some stupid jealous fit. Despite the inviting plot, however, some of the passages that describe Rachel’s and Swati’s thoughts and rumination drag, as they do not always serve to impart wisdom or advance the narrative. For example, Swati is unyielding in her view that a proper household needs both a full time cleaner and a cook. When Rachel ends up with a cleaner coming more frequently and a cook she definitely doesn't want things start to fall apart, and yet mysteriously they also come together, just not in the way either Rachel or Swati expected. His thick eyebrows meet over the bridge of his nose, making him look like a prince out of an Ottoman miniature. One can read Mother Land, then, in a state of appalled fascination, the transgression of full-on family hatred licensed, but also safely displaced on to another family. And the author basing this off of her real life and essentially writing Rachel off as herself does not sit right with me…. It would be one thing maybe if the author stuck to her own perspective as a cultural outsider, but to take on the voice of an insider through Swati's character?

slow: Overall, more time was spent establishing the differences between the two women rather than bring them closer to resolve their conflicts; I don’t feel like what was supposed to be a heartwarming, relatable story for many women like Rachel was as well executed as it could have been. The unusual, to an American reader, setting of Mumbai provides a fascinating, colorful backdrop for this heartfelt story of two women getting to know themselves. Recent titles from Unsolicited Press are the moon won’t be dared, a poetry collection, October 2021, and a winter night, a novel, released in March 2021.In many ways it makes her much happier; the only problem is that in doing so she's doing exactly to her daughter-in-law what was done to her - imposing her preferences and wants because it's a social and cultural norm in India.
