After the deaths of de Launay and Flesselles, Foullon understood crowds could be brutal, and he feared for his life. Knowing that he was unpopular and that he was being accused of being treasonous to the revolution, he began to circulate false stories of his own death. He then fled to a friend’s estate just south of Paris. The ruse that he was dead did not last long because local peasants discovered him on his friend’s estate.
During the later half of the 16th century in Medieval Japan, pikes used were generally 4.5 to 6.5m (15 to 21ft) long, but sometimes up to 10m (33ft) in length. By this point, pikemen were becoming the main forces in armies. They formed lines, combined with arquebusiers and spearmen. Formations were generally only two or three rows deep. The Spartans are unimpressed. The symbolic value of the head changed over time. Originally, it was displayed on a pole as an act of revenge by the monarchy and a warning to all who saw it, but by the 18th century it had become a historical curiosity and a relic. The head has long been admired, reviled and dismissed as a fake. Thomas Carlyle dismissed it as "fraudulent moonshine", [6] and scientific and archaeological analysis was carried out to test the identity after the emergence of a rival claimant to be the true head of Oliver Cromwell. Inconclusive tests culminated in a detailed scientific study by Karl Pearson and Geoffrey Morant, which concluded that there was a " moral certainty" [7] that the head was Oliver Cromwell's, based on a study of the head and other evidence.

According to legend, when the Roman general Crassus was defeated, they brought his head to an enemy king, who was watching a play that ended with a severed head being displayed. They switched Crassus's head for the prop. Foullon mounted the steps at City hall on 22 July 1789, but there was a problem. Once inside, officials did not know what to do with him but finally decided to incarcerate him at Saint Germain. In the meantime, an angry crowd appeared at City Hall demanding Foullon.
