About this deal

It takes less than 5 minutes to teach and, in my experience, you rarely only play one game once it gets going. Unless someone has a very low card, there’s going to be a period of time where everyone looks around the table, wondering who’s going to take the chance and play their card and see what happens.

Speaking from experience, win or lose, you also want to play again, to check it wasn’t a fluke or to try to improve. To kick off a round, everyone puts their hand in and then takes it out to signify the round has begun. The throwing stars were an exceptionally nice mechanical touch: they reveal more information than you’d expect, since you get a sense of everybody else’s hand when the lowest card is revealed.Sure, the game uses cards, but The Mind lives in actively listening to the other players in every moment. With such an elegant balance of mechanics working together, you will be curious why it took so long for something like this to come into existence. If the players have one or more lives left, and a player holds a very high card (say 95-100) it could be advantageous for that player to throw that card immediately and lose a single life, to force teammates to have to throw all of their lower cards and resume play with very few cards left in the collective hand. Once you have played it, completed it and showed it off to your friends, it won’t be hitting the table frequently. Some rounds will be easier because everyone will have good number separation, but during most levels you’ll have one or more situations where one player’s numbers are within one or two of anyone player’s numbers.

This is a hell of a game and one of the strongest gaming High Concept seen in the past years (the closest coming to mind was Hanabi a few years ago). If The Game can garner a nomination (which it did in 2015), so can The Mind , which is every bit as innovative, addicting, and tense. My eldest tried this route (I tried to explain 2 seconds per number is way too slow) and I found myself trying to convince him to speed up his delay time. The Mind card game is like other card games such as Sushi Go Party and Bohnanza in that everything you need to play comes in one game set. After a win, you have the option of playing in “Blind Mode,” which is the same game except you place cards face down and won’t know if you were successful or not until after everyone has played all of their cards. If you rarely play this kind of game, you should read the note in the box at the end of the playing rules now.
