In some of the books she tries to be almost ruthlessly unemotional, focusing on cold descriptions of events and relationships. I need to become involved in a lengthy, structured process (unaffected by chance events and meetings).

But after that, Exteriors is void of emotion and meaning, focusing instead on the physical world — things, people, and their actions — a direct result and illustration of an overload of emotion. The man who collects the trolleys was resting against the wall of the roofed-in passageway that connects the car park with the square. I do like the smart and courageous writing of Annie Ernaux, but I could have taken a pass from reading these snippets taken from her journal and never felt anything missing from my life. One of the key observations, which Ernaux makes in the introduction, is that for twenty years she has lived in Cergy-Pontoise, a new town forty kilometres outside Paris. I felt I was riding towards the sun; it was setting beyond the criss-cross lines of pylons hurtling towards the centre of the New Town. I look around the train, glancing the same old sea of faces staring at black mirrors (this is a tired description, and I’m leaving it there).

Perhaps that’s a part of the reason, but I also like to think that it just imitates reality and the way we think the closest. Most of the pieces arise from rail trips between Paris and her home in Cergy-Pontoise, ""a new town 40 kilometers outside of Paris. In doing so, it proposes a new way of thinking about literature and photography, and the ways in which shared themes – such as class, travel, social stereotypes, and individual identity within the modern urban environment – might be explored between these two forms. He told me that he thought I was trying to goad him into a reaction by showing him the watch and its manufacturer, having previously known his political stance and general affiliation with the company.Ernaux captures the feeling of contemporary living on the outskirts of Paris: poignantly lyrical, chaotic, and strangely alive.

In fact, I believe that these pitiful character summaries made Exteriors even stronger; they’re honest and quick, and sound like the mind, rather than some beautified version of it. This semi-autobiographical novel is a brief, aching requiem for the Prix Renaudot-winning author's mother, a victim of Alzheimer's disease. Again blurring the line between memoir and fiction, Ernaux continues the story of her family in journal form.The train crawls along, as the autumn conditions in Toronto necessitate caution when navigating the open-space areas of the subway track.
