About this deal

One of my favorite things about the pioneer days is their ability to accomplish so much without electricity. It’s amazing when one looks at how they lived and what they did. Many of us would be hard pressed to make it a few days, let alone years, without our electricity and stores.

Tea Light Oven - Tea Light Candle Heater - Double -Walled

Because we are so rural, we were without power for days. At the time, we didn’t have our woodstove installed yet. We installed it the very next winter. However, you can’t just go outside and start a fire in a random location. I mean, you could, but I wouldn’t recommend it. It is always better to have a designated space and a plan laid out as to how you will function if modern convenience isn’t available. I prefer alcohol stoves over canned heat because it is cheaper and has other uses. However, canned heat won’t evaporate as alcohol will, so it is easier to store long-term. For starters, you’ll need to have a lot of wood. Ideally, you let the wood burn down to coals and cook over those. It takes a lot of skill to cook on an open flame since the flame blows around and varies in height. One of the most important rules of preparedness is to always have at least 3 different methods for cooking food and heating water. In an emergency that goes on for more than a day or two, eating cold soup out of the can will get old, and sooner or later, you’ll need to boil water for sanitation purposes, at least. It is also possible to use a traditional stovetop by placing the tea lights in the drip pan under the burner and placing the pan on the top as usual. I’d recommend lining the drip pan with foil in case the wax spills. If you didn’t already know, a wood stove makes a wonderful cookstove too. Now, one day I hope to have a legitimate wood cookstove.

I used to live in Bosnia. Not only are power outages fairly common, but the country went through a miserable war and siege in the 90s.

However, if it wasn’t for our gas grill, I’m not sure what we would’ve done. We had no power, we couldn’t even make it off of our road though we were cutting wood with a vengeance, and I had 6 people in my home looking to me for food. Dutch oven cooking.I love cooking outdoors with my cast iron Dutch ovens. Let me say it again, I love cooking outdoors with my Dutch oven. It makes me feel like a bonafide pioneer woman, saves me money on my electricity bill, and I swear, food tastes better when cooked outside.
