About this deal

I’ve included a quote at the beginning of this post that I wrote in the article, which really encapsulates my motivation for writing this book. If you would like to attend the launch and hear me speak, please reserve your spot using the Eventbrite link: https://lnkd. Onome is an international student from Nigeria studying law at King’s College London whilst Chioma lives in Asaba, Nigeria. Such a mindset demonstrates a lack of empathy and a lack of desire to make amends for the harm caused. The book follows two lifelong friends, Chioma and Onome, as they investigate the atrocities that led to the massacre in their hometown of Asaba and the obstacles they encounter.

The University of Edinburgh has been home to numerous talented individuals, and second-year history and politics student Claudia Efemini is no exception. I am happy to share that I have been offered the position as Culture Editor at The McGill Daily, an independent student newspaper at McGill University that has been in operation since 1911. I started working on this novella in December 2021 so it is amazing to finally visualise the book and be offered an artistic representation of my manuscript. This is not at all to say that my time in Edinburgh so far has not helped me cultivate ideas for this book. A second-year History and Politics student at the University of Edinburgh, Claudia is also one of the youngest published authors in Scotland. As I read it, memories of my school days and the places where I have lived come to life, which helps me empathize with the characters.

Through a series of diary entries and letters these two young women attempt to come to grips with the massacre and fulfil their desire of publicising its existence in opposition to this censorship. You’ll hear from them in their own words about their experiences, ambitions, insights, and any advice they’d give to fellow women seeking to leave the planet better than they found it. We spoke with Claudia about publishing, the history behind the story, and the importance of learning about colonialism and its ongoing effects. Her novel, Little River, explores Scotland’s role in slavery in the Caribbean, with a particular focus on Scottish sugar barons in Jamaica from 1731 to 1812. I would have liked some more background about their relationship together and how they have grown - we get to know them when they are adults and see that relationship go through ups and downs, which is great. In A Letter Away From Asaba, Efemini makes it known that history does not remain a thing of the past. Claudia Efemini has created something that everyone should read, if only to learn a pivotal part in Nigerian history. I am thrilled to announce the book cover for my debut novel ‘A Letter Away From Asaba’ designed by Quinthia Nsema.
